Steering groan.
A customer may complain of a groaning noise when he turns the steering wheel
of
his 1989 5000 model. Here's the procedure for checking it out:
First, remove the tie rod-to-steering rack bolts, lockplate, tie rods and tie
rod
bracket from the rack. Pull the right-hand steering boot clamp and push boot
toward center of the car. Turn the wheel all the way to the right and lube the
steering rack bushing with gear grease. Put the boot back in place exactly
210mm
from the end of the steering gear. Turn the wheel back to straight again and
reinstall all the tie-rod pieces with a new lockplate. Start the tie-rod bolts
into the rack by hand, don't tighten them.
Bounce the car a couple of times to settle the suspension. Then torque the
tie-rod-to-steering rack bolts to 44ft.lb. Pull the hydraulic fittings at the
power
steering pump and inspect the banjo bolts for restrictions. If you find crud
in there, replace the banjo bolts. Don't try to clean them.
Separate the pump-to-accumulator line fitting and check if the damper hose is
missing or clogged. Put it all back together and fill the system with Part No.
G 002 000 steering fluid. If that doesn't silence the groan, replace the
steering rack.
