Re: Climate Control channel 22 - Kinda long reply
Phil & Judy's msg snipped
Phil,
I'd go with the speedo and have some interesting data to back this up.
I have a hand-held GPS that mounts in the car. Interested in seeing
just how accurate my GPS and then newly repaired speedo were, I enlisted
the help of a friend who uses DGPS (accurate to 3 meters) in his
business.
Early one Sunday morning, heading out to Montauk Point, we drove
side-by-side on the LI Expressway (in area with good North/South GPS
reception). Friend with DGPS in his vehicle, me with GPS. Here are the
results, speeds in MPH:
DGPS Speed GPS speed My Speedo
30 29.5 ~29
55 55.6 55
65 65.1 ~66
80 79.2 ~81
Note, it's impossible to keep a constant speed, but we stayed pretty
much within 1 mph.
Here's the good part. Our run at 80 caught the attention of Suffolk
County's finest, armed with Z28 and point-n-shoot. Thinking we were
racing, he pulled my friend over (Audi 100s' don't get pulled over, too
stealthy :-) ). Obviously, I stopped too. Cop: "know how fast you were
going?" Friend: "Yes, we do" and explains what we were doing. After
being assured it was a one off test, he let us go. BTW, the "gun" had us
at 80mph but cop would not divulge the type. In jest, my friend said,
"well your 'gun' is accurate." Cop then uses indifferent imperative,
"..., and have a nice day."
