Differential Fluid Check/Change-'86 5kt

I would like to check my diff fluid, and top off if necessary.  Genuine Audi
spec stuff in house.  Bright red sticker under hood says to check every
15000 miles.

GS recall was done on car, but I don't know exactly when-this involved the
diff fluid, so I am told (as well as bright red sticker).  However, PO had
AAMCO work on slushbox tranny 12/95, and I don't know if they would have
pulled out the diff as part of their work or not.  

Thus I am concerned that my diff has the right stuff in it, and that the
level is correct.

ANY BTDT on this? Bentley book does not go into diff checking, etc.

Also, any information on the whole issue of the GS recall would be nice to
know, especially if changing diff oil on 84 VW Quantum (5 cyl auto tr) as
well as other FWD VW autos might be a good PM move.
