83 ur-Q Fails Emission Test, Owner Needs Help (& Hold the Jokes)

Good evening, Q-Listers!

I took my '83 ur-Q in for its first Indiana emissions test, which it failed. The
engine starts fairly easily and runs rather well (for having 168k on the clock).
There is some ticking/clacking/knocking under acceleration, the source of
which I am not certain- the solid lifters, piston slap, or bearings (hope not)!

No obvious leaks are present, especially that funny 3-way rubber thing on
the valve cover. The car had been in storage for nearly a year, and had some
gas in there for that time. I've added some Techron & then filled it halfway
with fool. I drove it briefly to get it fully warmed up before taking it for the
test. Here are the figures:

HC: 2.00gpm Standard, 3.43gpm Read
CO: 30.00gpm Standard, 55.40gpm Read
NoX: 4.29gpm Standard, 3.00gpm Read
CO2: 488.70gpm Read

The crankcase oil is clean. I have yet to pull the plugs, but I pulled
a wire, the car has NGKs and they look clean, as if not very old.

It does smell like it's running rich, and I sorta think I may be hearing
an intermittant miss.

If someone has an ur-Q-specific checklist of emissions-related problem
areas, I'd appreciate seeing it. I have a set of graphs that the test equipment
prints out, which might shed some light on the subject to those of you
who understand this engine down to the bone. I can scan them and either
email them or put them on my web page.

Thanks in advance for any advice, BTDT, YMMV, and the like... -doug q
