This is only one of many possibilities, but your car may have developed
a crack in the little L-shaped hose that goes from the idle stabilizer
valve to the intake manifold. This is quite common. Under high vacuum
conditions (idle, off the gas) it can suck enough air to get the engine
up to 3k RPM. The fix is to replace it (~$45 at the dealer, cheaper in
other places) and pray it doesn't brake again, or you can do what I did
and put a piece of cooper pipe inside to prevent it from collapsing and
wrap electrical tape all around it. (ACHTUNG! make sure the piece of
pipe is big enough that it can't be sucked into the intake manifold!)
