I went through this exact process before buying my A6QW.
I looked at an A4Avant, and decided it was a "toy" wagon. For a
couple with no kids or dogs, who just wants to haul a few things
around, it *might* be adequately sized, but not for me. It is
far too small for our dog in the way back, the back seats are
small for adults, and the entire car just reeked "COMPACT".
The Passat seemed decent, the quality is pretty good for the
price, but the delivery schedule wasn't to my liking, and I would
have to get a new one (bought the A6 used), for too much money.
The answer to the question about the space difference between the
A6 and A4 wagon is: YES, there is at least twice the space in the A6.
