MB hydraulic tappet replacement

Phil,
Thanks for the advice on the MB cam follower change.

The idea of poking out the follower oilways with garden strimmer nylon cord (I hope that translates OK for our US friends!) worked a treat, although I don't think it was actually necessary. A conbination of workshop stores here at work and a MIG welder at home produced a tool not unlike the official Audi one for holding the CAM sprocket whilst undoing the nut.

And, wow!!!, what a difference. Noises that I hadn't even attributed to the followers have dissapeared. That said, I guess they did well to survive 161K miles.

Paul Beaurain put in an appearance just after I had fired it up for the first time. He timed his arrival perfectly to avoid helping we pull the car the length of the garage in 5th gear to ensure nothing untoward happened as the cam turned a complete revolution. Even then I was a little nervous cranking it on the starter for the first time! Perhaps that's just me being over cautious.

Regards,

Steve
