A question for European 4000 (80) quattro owners

Hi,

The North American (NA) continent version of the '84-'87 4000 quattro has 2
rectangular crumple channels inside the "boot" (trunk). These channels, I
think, only appear on the N.A. version. What does the floor of the boot in
a European 80 look like? If those channels are not there, what are in
their place? Nothing?

I ask because our recently purchased 4kq had been hit back there. The
impact crumpled one of those channels. I've pulled out and reformed the
boot. It doesn't look that bad. As I don't have any welding experience,
I'd like to just cut out that crumpled channel. The plus is that I gain a
more usable trunk. The negative is that the crush resistance will be
seriously reduced.

BTW, I've seen euro urq's here without those channels. Maybe the 4k/80 is
the same? Do rear end crashes usually total Audis over there?

TIA.

Best Regards,
