Bingo! The pad carriers were rusted enough to wedge the pad against the
rotor. A metal file and an hour's time and my 80q is respectable to drive
around town again!

Also, check that the pads can slide backwards and forwards easily.
The pad carrier often rusts very badly, and then you get uneven wear of the
pads and sticking brakes (which squeal). Another possibility is a rusted
calliper (could be expensive).
