My 88 GLi16v does that too.  A slight grind/clunk?  Yep, BTDT.

Two things helped mine immensely, although I have not been able to 100%
eliminate it.  The first was rebuilding the shift linkage.  The other was
switching my trans fluid to synthetic fluid at a slightly lower vis.  This
eliminated 85% of the grinding.

ps  FWIW, try the fluid first - it's cheaper and faster....
