Parking brake adjusting

I've just put new parking brake cables on my '90 200tqw.  The levers on 
the new calipers are moving as they should, but not pulling the new pads 
against the new rotors as I had hoped.  I left the cable adjustment 
alone.  My Bentley mentions "self adjusting brakes" repeatedly, what's 
the mechanism?  Can the self adjusting be hastened somehow?  What'd I 
miss?
