I believe the keyword here is between "elastic" collision and "inelastic"
collision. The crashing of two cars, or crashing one car into an immovable
object, is an inelastic collision where the kinetic energy is partially
or almost all converted to other forms (heat, light, sound, etc.) of
energies. So KE before the collision is not equal to KE after the
collision.
