Since it seems to me that you will have to pull the tank anyway (sorry), if
the 2WD and Q tanks are the same, $15 for a good tank from a U-pull-it
sounds like a better deal than patching your bad one - you don't want to do
this job twice! >>
Just some thoughts on the subject...
1-It's a real project, not for the faint of heart or uncreative.
2-the tanks are quattro specific.
3-90% of used 5ktq tanks that I see are leaking at the seams or will be
shortly.
4-I'd strongly consider a new one if I was into the car for the long term. Or
failing finding the budgetary room for a new one, try to get a decent used
from a Southern US salvage yard. Keeping in mind that UPS won't take a gas
tank unless several hoops have been jumped through(just like airbags), you may
have to coax someone.
