How long had this engine been out of the donor car? Is it possible you
have noisy lifters because it wasn't run in quite a while? I had a similar
problem when I acquired my 87 5KTQ. It had been sitting for 8 months
(because of an engine fire and my subsequent repair) It would clatter and
carry on as though the entire valve train was going to fall out of the car.
On the advice of my mechanic, I changed to Mobil One and added a quart of
"Rislone" additive to the oil. At each gas fill up for a month or so I
added a cup of Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas. I did this for two months.
At the end of that time everything was ultra quiet and I was able to drain
the Mobil One with the additive and add pure Mobil One. End of problem and
it has never recurred. BTW If it had come back, my mechanic told me to
repeat the procedure.
