Leather Steering Wheel

A bit of a nit, but the leather cover on the steering wheel of my 5000CS
has come unstitched.  Now the stitches on the top and bottom have come
undone.  With the stitches totally gone the leather cover is starting to
come loose...

It seems that if one (or one's SO/wife) was handy with needle and thread
you could fix this quite easily.  With probably less time than taking it
into a shop.  Anyone out there have any experiences to the contrary? 
Does one wet the leather to stretch it back before sewing it?  Any
advice?
