As Phil would say, Bullocks! Of course it's a breakthrough,
and as such with most technological breakthroughs is
initially usually VERY expensive. Early fuelish
injection was considered VERY expensive at the time,
and not all that reliable, but it was never the less
a breakthrough when it started showing up in
production cars in the mid/late 50's. Air conditioning,
radios in cars (read older publications, the discussions
of the "dangers" of the distraction of a radio in the
car are almost identical to the discussions we have
about cell phones today) alloy blocks, overhead
valve engines, independent suspensions etc. etc.
were almost always put into production on "Expensive
as Hell" marques and models first.

Breakthrough drugs are VERY expensive, breakthrough
technology (ie the 8086 chip when it came out) was
VERY expensive, etc. etc. etc., you just have to
have a company or individual with the foresight to
put new technology in the marketplace, and if
adopted and desired by enough, economy of scale
takes over and THEN it becomes "affordable."

And I though Economy 101 was a waste of time in
     High School.....
