ventilation woes

I am new to the list as of today and am putting a question out in the hopes
of finding a solution.

I own a 1986 Audi 5000 S (with 156K on it) that has been experiencing some
climate control problems.  The vents
don't want to realign to blow air out of the center vents in any mode.  I
do get heat out of the footwell vent,
but in any other mode, it all blow out of the window defrost vents.

Any idea of the cause/solution?

P.S.- Other than the outrageous price of parts, I think that this car has
been quite a steal.  I've had it since 1992 and have put
over 100K on it.

I look forward to some helpful pointers.
