Re: Hydraulic fluid alternatives?

Dave -

I've started using the Ford fluid ($5/quart from Ford farm dealers), but
only until I replace the pump and rack, which I should really do
sometime soon. The Ford fluid hasn't made things any worse, that I can
tell, but it hasn't stopped the leaks either. Not much cheaper than The
Parts Connection's recent sale on Pentosin 7.1 at $7.50/liter, anyway.

I'm not sure that I could tell a difference between the real G 002 000
"G," as the Parts Connection wisely calls it (or Pentosin 7.1
[non-synthetic]) and this Ford fluid. But the chemicals listed are
different enough to make me hesitate about using this Ford stuff in a
good hydraulic system. Real P7.1 has five listed ingredients, while the
Ford has two. One of them is the exact same, while the other sounds
close to a non-chemist like myself. (Bob Myers or someone else, could
you look at the full list if I send it out?)

At any rate, the Ford fluid is definitely more similar to P7.1 than
Audi's current G 002 000 that I got from Carlsen right after buying my
car. At the time I didn't realize that it was synthetic ("R" for red cap
in TPC-speak).
