Forget removing the grille. On the top of the bumper there are 2
removeable caps in front of the headlights, snap these off. This will
reveal 2 10mm hex bolts, remove. Disconnect fog lights if you haven't
already done so. With the bolts removed slide the whole bumper cover off
of the car forward. This should give you great access to the lower half
of the motor. Secondly, remove the grill and the lower painted metal piece
in that order.
Since you will be draining the coolant to change the water pump (you
better do this if your going this this procedure) you mind as well get
that darned auxiallary radiator out of there so you don't chew up your
knuckles trying to get that cam belt cover on and off. Now everything
should be easier to get to.

Because this step varies from one set of thumb and index finger to the
next, you best put the timing belt on and tension it. Then _briefly_ start
the car (remember, no coolant in it). If it makes a sort of chirping noise
when you start it the belt is probably to tight.
*another note: clean the area of the block very well where the o-ring for
the water pump will contact, personally I would lube the o-ring lightly
with a silicon based grease. This way the o-ring doesn't get chewed up
when you twist on it to tension the TB.

supposedlly no, but I'm not one to gamble like that. It also makes bad
practice since many engines are interference...
Good luck to you, it's an Audi, you'll need it.... :-)
