I had this problem with our 4000. The problem is the linkage between the
cylinder and the latch. I had the trunk really stuffed once and something
got jammed against the linkage and managed to pry it out. (just my theory
since I didn't actually see what happened) It didn't occur to me to try the
speaker, --- Huw ---- what a BRILLIANT IDEA !!! I just hope it wouldn't
have worked on a 4K,(otherwise I'll feel SO STUPID) but I will look. I
ended up buying a new lock mechanism from a dealer ($80) and paid $30 to
drill out the old lock. Drilling it out is not a hard part, the hard part
is popping the latch after the lock cylinder is out. I now have two keys
for the car and the power lock doesn't work for the trunk because the lock
they sent me was for the older model year and the connection for the PL
hookup was in a different place.

It seems to be a fairly common problem. I am planning to add a little twist
tie to keep the linkage securely in place at the point where it connects to
the lcok mechanism.
