MB turbo question...

As the thread from my previous MB question has died down ( I still don't
know whether to go bone-stock or allow MTM to twiddle with the motor), I
thought I'd pop another one out into the atmosphere of bits'n bytes.  My
turbocharger is going to be replaced (at 400 000km, a rebuild alone will
not let me sleep at night) as a part of the ongoing process.  Should I just
order the new factory exchange part, or should I deviate from this plan? 
Any BTDT's?

Another question - has anyone figured out how to use a decent sized
intercooler in their Urquattro without going to an A2 type grille/bumper? 
If so, how, what and where?
