I sawa special on the making of "Grand Prix" that starred James Garner.
Apparently the sound crew went to extremes recording every gear change
for every car on every track in each part of the track. They had many
thousands of engine sound clips. I have no idea how they kept them all
catalogued. For all their effort, the sound track is not spectacular.
Mostly because the recording technology was not that great back then.
Now we expect digital soundtracks with very high fidelity and multiple
tracks.
