You should at least be able to see it from beneath- get it up on a lift.

I had _exactly_ the same problem when buying mine, only between an '87 q
and a '91 FWD. I went for the q. I had a few misgivings about this,
especially since the newer car was in _a lot_ bettter condition than the
older one, but quattro's proven to be such a lot of fun that I wouldn't
want to miss it.
I believe the newer 90s have the V6 engine in the US- the I-5 in the older
models is very different in character. I myself prefer the I-5, but you
should drive both to determine what suits you more. The V6 is certainly
more expensive to work on, and a little more prone to failure, if I've
interpreted list talk on this subject correctly. (If not, please correct
me!) The V6 is a lot smoother than the I-5, anyway.
