If memory serves, this occurred in an FBI shoot-out (back in the old days
when six shooters were the standard issue, and .357's were new).
Two occupants of the car were killed (one in back seat, one in front)
after the bullet had gone through the trunk lid, everything in the trunk,
the back seat, a perp, the front seat, another perp, the dash, and the
firewall.
The engine block is what stopped it.

I believe that the bullet did stop the car though.

IME, a hot loaded .40 S&W will go through three DC phone books (CorBon 135
grain, +P JHP, 1350fps.). it exited in lots of pieces, but it got through.
It'll go through a steel wheel barrow without even slowing much.

FMJ ammo in a .357 (or the above described .40 load) will go through a car
door and still have enough punch to inflict real damage (then go through
the other side door).

I'd never use my car as a back-stop. Even something as well built as my Audi.
