My (car's) cylinder pressure is fine, but I'm burning (using?) oil at about
the same rate.  Plugs are always pretty clean.

My mechanic thinks my guides are shot (I keep telling him the turbo is
burning oil, he keeps telling me to shut up   :-)   ).  Like I said, I don't
have cylinder pressure problems.  He recommends doing the whole head job
since 90% of the work is getting the damn thing off in the first place.
Phil seemed to have luck purchasing a new head instead of reworking the old
one.  Don't know if that is an option to 'murricans.
