Lack of handbrake/car moves

It would be important to remember, and it wasn't made clear in the
previous posts, that in order for the car to be held by compression on a
hill, it must be in 1st gear if it is pointed down hill, and reverse if
pointed up hill. Engines turn backwards much more easily than forwards,
and the description of the car "jumping " down the hill in small
increments is symptomatic of the car being in the wrong gear. Experience
indicates that a slipping clutch and popping out of gear are unlikely
factors here.
