Of all the pumps that I've rebuilt, the one on Brian Armstead's 200 did not have
that gap, i.e. this central piece and the rear halve of the pump was one piece!
I could not believe my eyes. I even checked it with a loupe and a razor blade.

I think that's the reason why.
