Type 44 Eurolight Installation - Data point
I just installed a set of Bosch Eurolights in the '91 200q
yesterday. The procedure has been well documented by various listers, but I
thought I'd add a few observations I haven't seen mentioned.
These lights have internal wiring to a 4 pin male connector on the
back of the headlight assembly - the pins are ground, low beam, high beam,
city light. The matching female connector block is Audi P/N 447 972 957. You
have to get the metric versions of 1/4" female tab connectors to put in the
block - these are available from auto electric supply houses.
The rubber boot to seal the connector opening is Audi P/N 447 941
189.
There is a blind boss on the lower outside corner of each headlight
assembly which must be drilled to take the screw which secures the ends of
the front chrome bumper trim.
The Eurolight side reflectors are fitted with brushed stainless
steel trim. The polished stainless trim from the DOT lamps can be removed
with careful prying and fitted to the Eurolight reflectors to match the
lights to the existing grille trim strips.
I made up my own wiring harness. A 10ga wire runs up from the
alternator power stud and spits into two 12ga wires with 30A inline fuses.
Each wire runs to a Bosch relay which powers one headlamp high beam circuit.
The relays are triggered by the stock high beam wiring. Each headlamp
assembly is grounded to the firewall with 12ga wires.
The low beams run off the stock circuits. This avoids problems with
the autocheck circuit and maintains the DRL's. The stock wiring was left
intact - I made up a set of connectors from defunct 9004 bulbs to tap into
the stock headlight connectors.
Installation is straightforward, although the battery jump-start
post must be moved rearward to clear the right side light assembly - I just
installed it on the rearmost two mounting pins to gain enough clearance.
Installation took about two hours with another three hours required to make
up the wiring harness.
Great lights, well designed, well made, and wow! - talk about light.
Got an old Beatles tune running through my head since I tried them out -
here comes the sun, little darlin', here comes the sun....
