That may be so, but I'm already subscribed to rally-l and I don't need two
copies of the traffic. Rally-l can be pretty verbose at times.

If you want rally-l, subscribe to it.

And I'll bet a good percentage of the list *doesn't* care about rally-l, so
why should they be subjected to the additional mail traffic?

It's simply poor form to subscribe several thousand people to a list they
didn't ask for.
