stalling during hot day
Dear Audi enthusiasts.
History of my problem: My Audi 90 2.3E (1991, 120k) was (for past year and a
half) experiencing intermittent engine stalling during hot days temperature
above 25C. After cooling off for 15 minutes or so it would start up and run
OK. Then if day still hot problem would reoccur.
During "my extensive" troubleshooting I replaced fuel pump, filter, fuel
pump relay, I modified wiring and added another relay for the fuel pump. The
last thing appear to have fixed the problem, engine run OK on several hot
days (30C+), untill winter finished here in Australia. On a 1st hot day
(25C+) it happened again, after more than eight months since last occurence.
I took it to an independent Audi specialist. He after a quick look at the FP
told me that FP was not suitable for this car. He also said it was a cheaper
alternative apparently part from Mercedes range. The mechanic fitted genuine
Audi pump, filter and cleaned the fuel tank. I will know later this summer
if the problem was fixed.
Moral of the story: Dont assume part fitted to your car is genuine
(suitable) as I did when purchasing my first replacement fuel pump, I just
removed mine, took it to parts importer and said "Can I have one of these?".
Expensive lesson ! Hopefully finished.
