Dying sender in the engine.

Happened to both of my older cars, happens all the time.

You need a new multifunction sender (3 pin or 4 pin, 3 is the
"upgraded" replacement). Any mail order place has them for about
$40 or so, the dealer probably wants $100.

Takes less than three minutes to install.
