"Volcano syndrome" is caused by an internal leak in the power steering
pump. Foaming Pentosin boils vigorously out of the plastic reservoir - this
DEFINITELY gets your attention, because refilling with $15/liter green gold
only gets you another 50 or so miles down the road, even less if you're
driving fast. (Yaas, Audi afterburners are fueled by a special liquid
called Pentosin . . . ). Then HAL starts bitching - beep-beep-beep, lights
flashing, you gotta problem! Stop car, refill, repeat.
Onset is rapid - the difference between no problem and big problem is a few
days at most. It doesn't start slowly, give you a hint, leak a little more,
then more, etc., it starts erupting NOW - and won't go away unless you fix it.
It is cured utterly by rebuilding the pump - takes about two hours the
first time, rebuild kit costs about $25 or so - just a collection of
o-rings. You often need one more big o-ring which is not in the kit - any
hydraulic supply place has it for a whole quarter. Rebuild instuctions in
the fabled archives, they've been posted several times.
