Supercharging uses torque from the engine, where turbo charging uses heat
from the exhaust that would normaly be wasted anyway. So, in concept, I
much prefer turbo charging.

Many folks don't realise that even a supercharger installation _can_ lack
off idle torque. If the supercharger compressor is sized to provide good
boost at high rpm, it may not produce boost at low rpm. Conversely, a
turbo charger installation _can_ be designed to produce good torque at low
rpm without sacrificing high end too much. My point is that both routes
can produce undesirable characteristics at either end if not done
properly. Just having a supercharger does not guarantee instant boost.
Case in point, the A41.8T produces boost off idle - amazing! The
Thunderbird Supercoupe doesn't make boost until 2000rpm, even with a
smaller pulley on the supercharger.

I think that the turbo is definitely the way to go on any high
performance engine. I'd put two of them on a V6 A4 I think... :-)
