joan,
        i had the same problem with my 86 5kcs.  i tried messing with
stuff in the glove box because for me, to get the dash lights on, i
would have to open the glove box prior to turning on the lights.
eventually i found that it was one of the smaller marking tail-lights.
at first i was only under the impression that it was the liscense plate
lights and glove box lights that could cause this symptom, but other
lights can have the effect too.  who knows, check it out.  peace.
