VW problem - no q content
I have a question to pose the gearheads here. It's not quite
q-related, but it's a VW problem that my dad is having, and he wants
input from "that computer group you talk to all day"... ;) I plead to the
likes of Phil and others that are also VW experts... otherwise, I
apologize in advance for the WOB.
Patient: 1990 VW Passat (maybe a 91, dunno).
16v engine, w/ a 4-speed auto tranny. Car has ~140k.
The auto tranny is getting upset at something. While accelerating (at
any rate), the tranny shifts "late". ie. under slight load, easy
acceleration, at the point everyone expects the tranny to shift, it
seems to "freewheel" and the rpms climb, but there isn't really any
power. Finally, around 4k rpm, it clunks into the next gear. The
next gear works fine until the shift point, when the above stated
problem happens again.
My guess is something very bad is up with the tranny. We tried
changing the tranny fluid and it didn't help at all.
Any suggestions? Or, am I right and it's just a shot tranny?
Additionally, the engine idles VERY lumpy .. shakes the car all about.
Thanks so much,
Mark
