VIN's
Michael and Phil:
Remember that July production VIN's are a target cutoff, there is a very good
chance (specifically if you look at the 710 "production" of July 1982, the 476
"production" of July 1983, the 405 "production" of July 1984, the 1338
"production" of 1986, and the 883 "production" of 1987. That is also
interesting considering the July 1985 "production" comes in at a record 186).
Also, what shows as interesting is that Aug of each of the "following" model
years is record production months. For reference, Audi produced 60-120 cars
per month, if you go by the rest of the MY VIN records.
So my bet is that the expiring VIN's in the prior Model Year were targets, and
that July cars were assigned Aug production of the following model year. The
production date that shows 7-82 on Michaels cars is most likely correct, and
the VIN showing 8-82 (1983 MY) is also correct. Just because Audi jumped MY
before they technically jumped production is really a paperwork thing. Audi
uses VIN splits for part numbers would mean that all is well for you Michael.
Whatever changes were made to production of 1983 MY cars was done prior to the
7-82 production of your car.
