How I apply Rain-X:
First, make sure the glass you're applying to is at least somewhat warm to
the touch. For applying Rain-X, the hotter the surface, the better the
application will be.
Make sure the glass surface is clean. I use hand-sized sponges that are
typically sold for dish-washing purpose. I then use soap & water I use for
washing the car to wash the glass surface. After that, dry the surface of
the glass.
For applying, I use disposable paper towels, cut to about 1/4 of a "full
size" of the towel. Fold it so it has area about the size of your fingers
(sans thumb) combined. Saturate with Rain-X, and apply.
Personally, I don't care if Rain-X dries to a haze or not. After using it
for about 10 years, I've found that is irrelevant. What I make sure,
however, is that no glass surface will have the skidding feel (physics
term, "slip and slide"), but rather a smooth glide when you slide the
towel with Rain-X over it. If it doesn't give smooth glide feel, you
either need to apply more Rain-X; the glass surface is not sufficiently
warm; or that your Rain-X supply is several years old and is pooping out.
After applying, I spray the windshield with water, and proceed to wash it
down (again) with soap & water mix. Buff dry.
In the winter:
About a minute or two before I get to my home, I'd turn on the defrost to
full blast with temp control to volcanic setting. Opening a window or
sunroof a bit will decrease the uncomfortable level due to heat (optional
(: ).
When I arrive at driveway, I don't turn the engine off. But let it run and
have the defrost still blasting the windshield. Get a nuke-warm water
(don't use cold water, it's anti-produtive; don't use hot water, you'll be
sorry) and wash the windshield. QUickly dry the surface after wash, and
apply Rain-X as above.
If you cannot (or too lazy to) use bucket of soap & water, etc., I've
found that substituting soap with a cap-full or two of household glass
cleaner will also work to clean the surface of the glass. This would do
away with rinsing down of the soap & water in the dead of winter. The
water+cleaner solution is also excellent for interior surface of the
glass.
