85 4ksq Brake Question

Hi all, was changing my rear disc brake pads the other day only to find that
the pads on one side were well worn and the ones on the other side looked
new.  Hmmm, after a little deductive thought I realized that one side wasn't
working.  I've heard this is somewhat common on these older cars.  I'm just
curious if anyone knows what causes this- what part has failed and
ultimately what I need to replace.  Luckily, Santa Fe Audi Salvage is close
by and has tons of used Girlings for my car.  I would like to only purchase
the part or parts that would fix the problem.  Any thoughts would be very
much appreciated as always.
