More Stereo questions!

Considering the little (6" ?) speaker cutouts/grilles
in the hat shelf of an '84 5kS, I'm thinking about mounting
the speaker assembly made for a previous car at some distance below
that board, leaving the grilles in place and cutting no additional
holes. So there would be a ca. 7-8" bass and smaller mid and
tweeter speakers one each side, mounted in a 2 cm thick sheet of wood,
with a 3-way freq. divider. IIRC, the basses are towards the middle,
while the others are towards the ends of the board, and partially
overlapping the Audi grilles.

How would this way of mounting affect the sound?
Considering folks mounting basses away in in the trunk, and the
mid/high-range speakers being close to the grilles, I'm hopeful,
but could really use a BTDT.

Appropriate, some of the speakers are German-made. :)
