Based on your description one possibility for the bucking behavior is low
voltage. If the brushes on the alternator are right at the limit, the
alternator will only charge intermittently. This would let the battery go to
a low state, which definitely does cause the bucking bronco behavior you
mention. (Having been through three dead alternators, plus one with a bad
brush, I am WELL familiar with the symptoms.)
As to the too-hot-to-restart, did you hear an afterrun fan kick on to cool
the engine when you shut it down? I am assuming that the older Audis had the
afterrun fan, but not the coolant recirc function. If the fan did not run,
the system would have continued to absorb heat from the engine. Which would
have allowed it to reach the described conditions.
Keep in mind that these comments are from a 4K/5K driver, not an experienced
UrQ owner. I'm addressing the systems I'd check in the same circumstances.
Later.
