Re: Paint problem?



I have no idea if the paint process was somehow "special" on these cars.
The only thing I can think of is that they were using water-based paints
(instead of solvent-based) and finishes before they were ready.  I can't
remember the timeline for the introduction of this stuff and Germany had
lots of environmental stuff (Green party, eco-terrorism, shutting
down/speed limiting the Autobahn, etc...) going on during the late 80s.

My car has the same markings.  My father-in-law has the same on his 2 90Qs
(88, 89).  I've seen a dozen or so other cars of the same vintage and they
all have the same markings.  When I purchased my car, I called AoA and they
said I was the first person to ever call about the paint on cars of those
years, offered no insight as to why it would happen (discounting the
water-based before its time theory of mine), that there weren't any recalls
for paint problems and that she'd stick me in the database for future
reference.
