I ran 92 octane Chevron supreme for the duration of my Audi ownership 
experience, up until fairly recently when the List advised me that it 
wasn't necessary, unless it pinged under load.

So, I tried regular 87 octane with no problems, and my timing was advanced 
a fair amount.  This is in an '86 Coupe GT, with triple electrode Bosch 
Silbers, a Schrick 268/272, K&N, free-flow exhaust to a Borla, and 
eventually an AVS "black box"...

Silly me.  I can just imagine how much more money I could have diverted to 
other more useful things...
