RE: Transmission Mounts

Well, I can't really see why bad ones would contribute to poor shifting
given that the shift linkage is indexed to the tranny case itself, but I
must say that the mounts on my 4kSQ with 205K miles were pretty much shot.
The one on the passenger side was protected with a shield, so it wasn't THAT
bad, but with engine oil and Pentosin dripping on it over the years the one
on the driver's side wasn't doing much. I will be replacing the tranny
mounts on my '88 5kCSQA with 140K on principle, but I don't yet know the
condition of the ones that are installed. The one on the driver's side
should be pretty easy to do with the tranny in place ... it will probably
take a bit more to do the passenger's side ...

BTW, I also found the driver's side engine mount to be shot. IMO the engine
mounts are the ones to be most worried about. While I'm not sure I buy it
yet, I've heard some say that engine mount failure is at least a contributor
to broken EMs & studs ... I know that on the QTC a broken passenger's side
engine mount allowed the engine to drop enough so that the oil pan would
contact the subframe crossmember on acceleration.
