New A4 Sighting?

I just got back from a family gathering/VAG party (1 new Golf GTI, A2 Golf,
A2 Sirocco, 97 A4TQ, 90 100Q... and think, that was only half the cars, man
I love my family), and when I was coming back up 23 right north of Ann
Arbor I saw another A4 up ahead. My father was driving and didn't notice
the car but we stayed with him for quite a while. I don't know if I would
have realized it was an Audi since it was dark, but once when we were close
I noticed the 4 rings on the trunk panel- and I noticed the Manufacturers
license plate. That started the gears in my head turning but I didn't think
that much of it becuase we were so close to AoA headquarters in Dearborn. I
didn't see the car again until we were right next to it the exit it left
on. That's when I noticed the wierdness. It was the right size for an A4, I
am almost sure of that, but the rear end was exactly like an A6. It was
much too smoothed out and rounded to be an A4, unless they made major
changes for the '99 models. Was this an example of the new A4 revision?
I've heard rumors about it and seen the sketches but does anyone know if
they actually exist. I'm temped to believe that I didn't see correctly (it
was dark and all) but it certainly looked like an A4 with an A6 rear end.
And thoughts appreciated.
