Idle problem- 87, 5kcst
I am writing on behalf of my friend, another Audi owner who does not (yet)
have access to the infinite wisdom available on this list <g>.
He has a 5kcst which he recently replaced the head gasket on. Ever since,
it has idled very roughly and feels like its running on 4 cylinders when
you first give it the gas, after that, it hums along just like it should.
He's cleaned the ISV (at my request) which improved things slightly but not
much.
Another weird thing........If he pulls the oil cap off while its idling, it
stalls immediately.
I think there's something screwed up in the crankcase ventilation system,
but I have no experience with this problem.
His SO was driving it when the head gasket originally went and just about
melted the engine down.
The engine got so hot that it started to melt the ignition wire loom on the
top!
He replaced the water pump, TB and head gasket, put it all together and
started it up, but immediately shut it down due to lack of oil pressure.
After pulling the pan, he found a glob of plasticized goo about the size of
a small cup plugging the suction strainer of the oil pump. He cleaned it
out, buttoned it up and the car still runs pretty good exept for this idle
roughness.
Any ideas about the idle problem or what the heak he could have melted into
the oil pan?
TIA
Jerry
