There is a reference mark on the distributor for a basic timing.When you get
all the timing marks aligned on the crank and camshaft the marks on the
distributor (under the dust cap) should line up. They are just couple of
lines.  One scribed onto the distributor body and one on the trigger wheel.
This is how the factory set the timing on new engines (I was told).
