87.5 CGT-Throttle cable setting

Last month the rubber bushing that helped connect the gas pedal to the
throttle cable disintegrated on me. I replaced it using one from an '86
Golf (turns out it's the same part).

My question is: is there a "correct" setting for the throttle cable? By
that, I mean while fishing around for a problem I adjusted the tension on
the throttle cable by moving the pin on the cable near the throttle body.
Is there a recommended amount of tension that should be on the cable when I
press on the gas? How far open should the throttle be when I have the
pedal down to the floor? Is this how I adjust it? Am I making any sense?

TIA

Jon
