drivetrain noise in 200 TQAvant

Hi.  I am becoming concerned with the noise coming from the drivetrain in my
1990 200 Quattro wagon (150k miles).  When torque is applied and/or the
clutch is released, there is an initial clunk from the front and rear ends.
While the car was on the rack, we noticed that on front wheel could turn for
3 inches before the other would turn.  I changed the strut mounts in the
front to see if that would help. My mechanic and I are coming to the
realization that things might need to be replaced. Any advice on what to
look for, where to get used and/or rebuilt parts like cv joints,
differentials, etc.?  Any help would be much appreciated.  I would like to
address these issues before I start towing my sail boat come the spring.
Otherwise, I love this car!!!
