Re: Wipers on 97 - A6Q
The wiper arm must sit at an angle to the glass which allows it to flop
back and forth as it wipes. The objective is to drag the rubber blade across
the glass, not push it. Most cases of wiper squeal and chatter are caused
when the entire blade or a portion of it is pushed across the glass. This is
due to glass contamination, old stiff rubber elements, improper adjustment,
or aerodynamic blade lift (and not enough friction to flop the blade over)
at high speed.
To start, clean your windshield with Bon Ami to get rid of oil, wax,
RainX, and other contaminants - believe me, they don't improve the operation
of your wipers. Install new wiper rubbers or clean the existing ones if less
than 6 months old. The next time it is raining, take a close at the blades
to see if they are dragging in both directions. This has to be done on wet
glass while sitting still (it's a really, really bad idea to focus on the
blade while driving!). Adjustment is made by twisting the wiper arm to
adjust the angle of the blade to the glass.
Don't break the plastic wing on the drivers side (if you have one) when
twisting the arm!
