motor internals; 2v vs 4v inline 5
I have a question conserning reliable power potentials of the mid-late 1980s
2v turbos and the 1991--1995 4v 3B motors. Are the pistons and crank in the
older engines forged also? Apart from the head and cr, are the bottom ends
the same ? I see very similar power potentials in 'kits' advertised /
offered for each engine, with the exception that the older motor doesn't
seem to require a trick exhaust manifold (ala RS1) or a set of lower
compression pistons (it already has them).
I realize the 4v engine has a much lower torque peak- very disirable, but my
87 tq w/ a chipped computer isn't too bad. The 3B motor is certainly
superior in my view, however it looks like the 2v can be made into a real
monster also. My problem is my 91 200Q is "my wife's" so if I want to "go
nuts" I'm more or less looking at my older unit. I believe the older cars
are lighter ?? Any body know how much ?? (Is it substantial)??
Are there other driveline problems (ie your'e only as good as your weakest
link) that need addressing if one wanted a good solid 300+ hp. I'm not
talking about brakes, I'm talking about forward thrust (!) Does the 2v oil
pan suffer the same problem under high "G" loads as the later ones...
probably ??? Any info/ thoughts greatly appreciated...
